The President awards NATO Supreme Allied Commander Admiral James G. Stavridis with the Cross of Commander
Wednesday, July 18, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Admiral James G. Stavridis, Commander of U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), to discuss regional security, NATO's readiness to implement contingency plans, the air policing mission, and strengthening energy security.
"This year collective security guarantees - important for Lithuania and the Baltic region - have been confirmed through NATO's contingency plans and air policing mission. We now have to ensure that NATO forces are ready to implement them in practice," the President stressed.
According to the President, the build-up of Russian military capabilities in Kaliningrad, which borders NATO member states, requires a reliable and flexible interaction between NATO forces in the Baltic region through joint exercises, training and smart defense initiatives.
The air policing mission in the Baltic States and NATO's Energy Security Center of Excellence in Vilnius are among the best examples of smart defense to pool and use resources as effectively as possible and to enhance the security of the Allies.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded Admiral James G. Stavridis with the Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in recognition of his contribution to enhancing Lithuania's national security and defense.
